Numbers add up for today's newlyweds

At 12 minutes and 12 seconds after noon today on the twelfth day of the twelfth month of 2012, Mike Nazar and Teresa Panchuk will be getting married at the Viscount Gort.

Chances are -- if the Internet is to be believed, and who would question its veracity? -- they'll be among tens of thousands of couples getting married around the world when all the 12s align. It's the last time the same number pops up all those times together until the next century, unless, of course, someone invents a new calendar with more months.

Their ceremony gets going right at noon, and will carry through the epochally infrequent moment.

"My fiancée, she wanted to make it memorable and unique at the same time," said Nazar.

"It only happens once -- both (date and marriage), you hope," said Nazar.

He's turning 40, she's 45, and they've been engaged for three years.

Their justice of the peace, the Marrying Man, a.k.a. Henry McDonald, said he's got two weddings lined up today, but the other couple has to settle for the evening and just three 12s.

Beyond the numerical significance of today, said the Marrying Man, the alignment is "about serenity and long-lasting love."

And, he said, "It's easy to remember."

Marriage commissioner Shannon Jackson said she's officiating at two weddings this evening, and both couples told her, "They wanted the ease of remembering the date."

Calgary-based numerologist Leah Sinclaire is writing a book on triple numbers and their symbolism, with plans to launch an app in the spring. Sinclaire said she can understand why dates like 12-12-12 appeal to so many.

"I think the draw would be that it's kind of like a once-in-a-lifetime thing," Sinclaire said. "They feel like there's a specialness to it because there's a synergy and a sameness to it."

While there's no guarantee of any added luck for those getting married on 12-12-12, Sinclaire likes what she sees in the date.

"The two positive qualities for this date are double sixes, and a six is about home, heart, family, children, relationship, marriage. The top number on the pyramid is a three, which is romantic love," she said.

Meanwhile, not so surprisingly, there's a new movie out titled 12/12/12, says the website Internet Movie Data Base, with the jolly description: "When baby Sebastian is born on 12/12/12 everyone around him starts to die. Soon, his mother realizes that her son is the spawn of hell."

Charming, eh?
