OCD forum to hear story of thriving by survivor

LINDSAY CARSWELL has come a long way in the 21 years since she was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder at the age of nine.

Wednesday evening, the 30-year-old Carswell will address the forum on OCD in adolescents and young adults at 727 McDermot Ave. at 7 p.m.

Carswell will talk about "how I lived through it and how I survived. I fully progressed with dealing with it and I'm thriving.

"I have an amazing family who stuck with me. I have an amazing therapist," said Carswell, who gives a great deal of credit to the Manitoba Adolescent Treatment Centre.

"I've been on medication since I was 11. Since I'm doing so well, I'm coming off it," she said.

The 1997 flood forced her family out of their St. Adolphe home and Carswell soon dropped out of Fort Richmond Collegiate. "It's like such anxiety and stuff," Carswell recalled.

Now, she's getting her Grade 12 through adult education and hoping to pursue a career in the mental health field.
