Officer still on administrative duty despite fraud acquittal

AN RCMP officer who was acquitted of a fraud charge two months ago remains on administrative duty.

Cpl. Houman Shoaai was found not guilty of fraud over $5,000 during a trial in March involving an Autopac claim.

Shoaai was placed on administrative duty in May 2010 after he was charged. The charge was laid following an investigation by Manitoba Public Insurance after Shoaai filed an Autopac claim following a collision involving a personal vehicle near Elphinstone.

The RCMP said at the time the claim was later found to have inconsistencies that triggered the MPI investigation.

A spokesman for RCMP said Shoaai remains on administrative duties pending the conclusion of an internal disciplinary process.

Shoaai filed a civil suit againt MPI before he was charged, claiming the Crown agency's tactics employed in its investigation caused him humiliation and embarrassment. Shoaai was seeking more than $20,000 in damages, which was the value of his vehicle.
