Paws hit pavement for 'Fluffy's Law'

DOZENS of dogs and a few cats marked their territory with their owners outside the Manitoba legislature Saturday in support of "Fluffy's Law." The proposed amendment to the province's Residential Tenancies Act is intended to protect tenants with pets from being evicted.

Doug Parisien, who is visually impaired, said his service dog Payton can live with him now -- but he will be out the door in a few months when the animal retires.

"There are two people in my building who would take him, but they can't," Parisien said. "My dog has never caused any damage. This is why I support this law."

Fluffy's Law is a private member's bill drafted by the Liberals, and it has little chance of passing without the support of the NDP government. "We have not forced landlords to take pets because we want to balance the needs of pet owners with those of landlords and tenants with health issues caused by pets," a provincial spokeswoman said.

To encourage more landlords to accept pets, the province recently allowed them to add a special pet deposit.

The Winnipeg Humane Society says 1,000 pets are given to the society annually due to no-pet policies.
