Police investigate Sunday along the CN Rail line near Borebank Street and Taylor Avenue, where a young man walking along the tracks was killed by a freight train.

A young man on foot died early Sunday morning after he was hit by a CN Rail freight train in south River Heights.

He was hit and killed at 3:41 a.m., a spokeswoman for CN said.

City and CN Rail police are investigating near the tracks by Borebank Street and Taylor Avenue.

Police said the young man had been walking along the tracks, behind the Buggy Bath car wash, at about 3:41 a.m. when he was struck by an eastbound train.

The man, who lived in the area, was taken to hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Police said the incident was an accident and it remains under investigation.

The young man's family has been notified but his name is not being released.

"It's a tragic reminder" to stay away from the tracks, said Lindsay Fedchyshyn with CN in Toronto.

"It's important to stay away," she said.

The track speed in the area is 56 kilometres per hour, and the train was going the speed limit, she said.

No further information was available Sunday.
