Pet shelter needs help with bills, cats, dogs

THE weather outside is frightful, especially for certain four-legged beasties.

That's why the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter is scrambling to find accommodations for homeless dogs and cats people are bringing in.

"Cats are coming in and they're frozen. We had one brought in over the weekend that was literally starved to death," said Carla Martinelli-Irvine, the shelter's executive director.

The shelter on the 3000 block of Portage Avenue holds 65 animals, over 40 of which are cats right now. The shelter has 32 puppies and over 200 cats on the waiting list. Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter is a no-kill pet shelter.

"We need financial help for veterinarian bills. That's first and foremost. We're in desperate need for canned cat food and clumping cat litter -- we go through 500 pounds a week."

Martinelli-Irvine said most of the dogs are litters of puppies where an expectant stray dog was hanging around someone's yard. With snow arriving last weekend, the puppies aren't likely to survive outdoors.

Most of the cats are from owners who don't want them anymore, she said.
