Pharmacare adds pricey drugs

A pricey cancer drug and 29 generic medications have been added to the provincial pharmacare program, health officials announced Wednesday.

Revlimid, an oral drug to treat multiple myeloma, is one of eight drugs now included through Manitoba's exception drug status. Patients who meet certain standards can have their prescriptions reimbursed through pharmacare.

Another seven drugs, including Apidra for diabetes, Cymbalta for depression, Coversyl Plus HD for hypertension, Volibris for pulmonary arterial hypertension, Azarga for glaucoma, Viread for HIV, and the oral contraceptive Yaz will also be included.

Another 29 drugs have been added to pharmacare, including amlodipine besylate -- a second generic version of one of the most prescribed high-blood pressure medications in the world.
