Phil Fontaine given award for human rights education

MANITOBA'S Phil Fontaine has been named the first recipient of a national award for human rights education.

Fontaine, elected three times as grand chief of the Assembly of First Nations, will be honoured March 18 in Montreal.

Montreal-based organization Equitas has named Fontaine as the first recipient of the Equitas Award for Human Rights Education, an annual juried award that recognizes and celebrates exceptional contributions made in the field of human rights education.

The organization says that Fontaine is being recognized for his record of achievement in raising awareness concerning the importance of human rights to the lives of all Canadians. Fontaine is a member of Sagkeeng First Nation.
