Fundraiser for lost dogs

Winnipeg Lost Dog Alert is holding its first annual Bud, Spud and Steak fundraising event on Oct. 11. The event for the organization, which reunites lost dogs with their owners, is being held at the Tijuana Yacht Club at Canad Inns Polo Park from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by calling Kim at 204-290-8297.

Heroes of mental health

The Canadian Mental Health Association, Winnipeg region, will announce its Heroes of Mental Health Awards on Oct. 5. The awards luncheon, hosted by Chrissy Troy of 1031 Virgin Radio, is on Oct. 5 at the Fort Garry Hotel ballroom starting at noon. For ticket information call 204-982-6103.

Tumour group's inaugural meeting

The Acoustic Neuroma Group of Manitoba is holding its first meeting on Oct 23 at 7 p.m. The organization, a new support group for people who have this form of non-malignant brain tumour, will deal with personal experiences, including those with gamma-knife treatment, surgery and symptom coping strategies. Dance like the '50s for animals

You can dance and help animals at the Jukebox Saturday Night Remembering the '50s social evening on Oct. 27. The event, for Friends Fundraising for Animal Shelters, is being held at the St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church auditorium, 250 Jefferson Ave., from 8 p.m. to midnight and features contests and a silent auction. Buy some art, help erase poverty

You can buy a piece of art and help reduce poverty in the community. The Jubilee Fund, a local ethical investment fund that provides short-term loans to not-for-profit organizations and businesses to reduce poverty, is holding its eighth annual auction on Oct. 23 at Canad Inns Polo Park. Help grant wishes

Children's wishes will be granted, thanks to a Neighbour Helping Neighbour social on Oct. 27. The event, which benefits the Children's Wish Foundation, is being held at the Greendell Park Community Centre starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12.50. Horseback therapy fundraiser

Buying a steak and a beer can help special-needs children receive therapy on horseback. The Manitoba Riding for the Disabled's fourth annual Bud, Spud and Steak fundraiser takes place on Oct. 27 at Canad Inns Polo Park. The event includes a 50/50 draw, silent auction, and choice of steak or, in advance, chicken or vegetarian. The event runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and tickets cost $20. Call 204-925-5905.

Monster Jam crushes hunger

Maximum Destruction driver Kreg Christensen will be helping to crush hunger on Oct. 3. The Maple Leaf Monster Jam driver will meet fans and take donations of non-perishable food items, including peanut butter, pasta and canned soup, for Winnipeg Harvest. Christensen will be at Polo Park Shopping Centre from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The first 200 people to donate five food items will get a free voucher for the Monster Jam show at the MTS Centre Feb. 23 and 24, while discount coupons will be available for everybody who comes.

Zombies help hungry

Zombies will be helping eradicate hunger instead of eating brains on Oct. 13. Participants in the annual Winnipeg Zombie Walk are being asked to bring a non-perishable food item to the starting location for the walk -- the Oodena Celebration Circle at the Forks -- at 6:30 p.m.

Daffodils blooming for cancer

The Canadian Cancer Society is holding a Daffodil Gala on Oct. 20. The gala, which will feature dancing with Ron Paley and his Orchestra, fundraising auctions, gourmet dinner and champagne reception, is being held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.
