Songbird banding
WONDER how we know where songbirds go when Manitoba goes into a deep freeze for several months? Well, you'll find out if you sign up for a workshop at Oak Hammock Marsh on Aug. 18, between 10 a.m. and noon. You'll watch as trained people put bands on songbirds and learn about the whole process. The workshop is $5 per person and you have to register by Aug. 15. Call 467-3300 for more information.
Sex and the City star
SEX and the City meets cancer when award-winning actress Cynthia Nixon speaks at a fundraiser on Oct. 25. Nixon, who played Miranda in the TV series and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, will be the keynote speaker at the 21st Guardian Angel Benefit on Oct. 25. The event also features a gourmet dinner and fashion show. Tickets cost $150, $2,000 for a corporate table, and youth tickets (25 years of age and under) are $100. For more information call 786-0627.
Cycling for rehab
A group of cyclists will be pedalling between Grand Forks and Fargo on Aug. 18-19 to raise money for children with disabilities. The 12th annual Road to Rehab, a fundraiser for the Children's Rehabilitation Foundation in Winnipeg, will see several cyclists pedalling more than 150 kilometres from Grand Forks to Fargo on one day and then back the next day. To pledge a rider, go to www.crf.mb.ca/donate-online-st1.cfm or for more information call 475-5073.
Rappelling for a cause
WINNIPEGGERS will be jumping off the top of a high rise building on Aug. 16, to raise funds for people with disabilities. Thankfully, they will be tethered and rappelling down the side of the RBC building at 220 Portage Ave., with the help of experts to support the SMD Foundation/Easter Seals Manitoba. All proceeds stay in Manitoba to help the 47,000 children and adults living with disabilities. Help furry friends
THERE are two ways you can help our furry friends next month. A yard sale is being held on Aug. 18 to benefit Boston Terrier and Pug Rescue of Southern Manitoba. It is being held at 19 Christenson Pl., in the Tyndall Park area, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone with gently used items they can donate can email btprmb@gmail.com . Meanwhile, an event featuring a dog wash, barbecue, and 'paw'dicures is being held at the Pet Valu at 3 Reenders Dr. on Aug. 26 from noon to 4 p.m. All proceeds from the event goes to Friends Fundraising for Animal Shelters.
Tee off against ALS
