Protect against bullies
Women can learn how to protect themselves and their children from being bullied through technology on Nov. 15. A free workshop is being hosted by the Fort Garry Women's Resource Centre at 1150A Waverley St., and is being presented by the Family Violence Consortium of Manitoba. It will look at computers, cellphones, cameras and more. The workshop is free, but donations of non-perishable food or money to the FGWRC would be appreciated. The workshop, which runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., is open only to women and space is limited. Pre-register at 204-477-1123.
Auf Wiedersehen to cold
The German Society of Winnipeg is looking for help getting heat in its clubhouse. The society is holding a fundraising dinner and dance on Nov. 3, featuring its renowned brass band to raise funds for a GSW boiler unit for its clubhouse at 121 St. Charles St. Tickets are $35 per person and include appetizers, dinner, coffee and desserts. Bone up on osteoporosis
You can learn about bones and osteoporosis at a forum being put on by the Manitoba chapter of Osteoporosis Canada on Nov. 13. Called Fractures, Fears and Family, the free forum will be held at the Masonic Centre, 420 Corydon Ave., starting at 7 p.m. The forum is free, but registration is required by calling 204-772-3498 or emailing manitoba@osteoporosis.ca
Adele Wiseman evening
The life and letters of award-winning author Adele Wiseman will be discussed on Nov. 12. The Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada will present her works, drawings and interview excerpts. Former MLA Roland Penner will discuss his friendship with her and Prof. Neil Besner will assess her Canadian literary significance. Tickets are $22 for members and $25 for non-members. It is being held at the Berney Theatre, 123 Doncaster St., starting at 7 p.m.
Benefits for stray pets
A trio of fundraisers will help homeless dogs and cats at the Winnipeg Humane Society. First, The Wizard of Paws, the 19th annual Bow Wow Ball, is being held on Nov. 10 at the Fairmont Hotel. Tickets are $175 apiece, $200 for a patron, and $2,000 for a corporate table. A pet can get its photo with Santa Paws at the society's 45 Hurst Way facility on Nov. 18 and 25. Photos are $12 for a 5x7 print or $25 for three, with payment due at the photo session. You have to make an appointment to get a photo taken. Then on Dec. 2, from 12 to 5 p.m., there is Paws for the Season, the annual open house, bake sale and craft sale. Go to www.winnipeghumanesociety.ca for more info.
