International Women's Day
Former MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis, Sarasvati Productions, and 2012 Canadian Folk Music Award nominees Sweet Alibi are joining to celebrate International Women's Day in Morden on March 7. The event, which benefits Genesis House, a women's and children's shelter in Winkler, is being held at the Morden St. Paul's United Church at 7 p.m. Wasylycia-Leis is giving the keynote speech, Sarasvati is presenting a selection of monologues and Sweet Alibi will perform. Gala for ALS
The annual Cornflower Gala to support people with ALS is around the corner. People can dine and dance under planes in the Western Canada Aviation Museum's hangar to help support services for people who have the fatal, rapidly progressive neuromuscular disease, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The event is catered by Urban Prairie Cuisine and features a three-course meal, music by Mr. E and The Jazz Gumshoes, a live and silent auction with prizes including a trip for two to anywhere WestJet flies, and much more. Humane Society telethon
A nine-hour telethon is being held to help the Winnipeg Humane Society on March 17. The IAMS 1001 Donations telethon will be on Shaw TV from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., as well as on Virgin 103.1 and QX 104 radio. Students in Red River College's creative communications program are hosting, producing and directing the telethon. Last year, the telethon raised $62,000.
Necklace for cardiac care
A Winnipeg-based jewelry designer has come up with a pendant necklace to raise funds for St. Boniface Hospital's Women's Heart Health Initiative. Hilary Druxman's Heart of a Woman pendant necklace retails for $40, with 100 per cent of the net proceeds supporting the WHHI. Bingo bowl for dogs
A St. Paddy's Bingo Bowl is being held to benefit the Boston Terrier and Pug Rescue of Southern Manitoba. The event, which also features door prizes, a silent auction and a 50/50 draw, is on March 16 from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Dakota Bowling Lanes, 1085 St. Mary's Rd.
