For $5, you might win a chance to fly anywhere WestJet flies -- and help children living with disabilities. The Children's Rehabilitation Centre's annual WestJet draw is back. Only 2,000 tickets have been printed for a prize of two return airfare tickets. The draw is June 9 at the RBC Cruisin' Down the Crescent at the Rehabilitation Centre for Children. How to buy a home
A free workshop for women on how to buy a home is being held on April 30. Hosted by the Fort Garry Women's Resource Centre, the workshop will show how to write and offer to purchase, enter into a mortgage, and figure out the money needed to buy including legal fees and closing costs. BBQ battles diseases
By eating a hamburger or hotdog, you can help people living with Crohn's disease or Colitis. M&M Meat Shops is holding its 25th annual charity barbecue fundraiser for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada at all of its locations on May 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A minimum $3 donation gets you a hamburger or hotdog, drink and a bag of chips.
Run so kids can ride
People -- not horses -- will be running on May 11 to help children with disabilities ride therapeutic horses. Manitoba Riding for the Disabled Association has been chosen as the charity of choice for the Physio Fit Run on May 11 in Assiniboine Park. Until May 3, it costs $32 to enter the 10-km run, $20 to go in the five km run/walk, and $20 to join the three-km walk. Help give them voices
You can help give a child living with disabilities a voice. The Open Access Resource Centre, which loans out speech generating devices, is holding a draw for an iPad Mini on May 15. All proceeds will go to buy new software and equipment for loans and training. Dog days of summer
It will soon be the dog days of summer and that's also the name of a fundraiser in support of Manitoba German Shepherd Rescue on June 2. People can take their dogs to Vada's Club K9, at 628 St. Anne's Rd., from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and receive a dog wash for $15, a pawdicure for $10, de-shedding for $15, or a combo pack for $30. Bowl on Mother's Day for charity
You can honour mom, eat pancakes, bowl some games and help the battle against Multiple Sclerosis all at the same time on Mother's Day. Academy Lanes, at 394 Academy Rd., is holding a Mother's Day Pancake Breakfast on May 12 from 10 a.m. to noon. For $9 a person you get pancakes, juice or coffee, and two hours of bowling. Endowment Fund luncheon
Margaret Redmond, president and CEO of the Assiniboine Park Conservancy, is the guest speaker at the 2013 Women's Endowment Fund luncheon hosted by the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba on May 10. Redmond will speak on how philanthropy is creating Canada's greatest urban park. Tickets for the luncheon, being held at the Fort Garry Hotel, are $135, which includes a $100 tax receipt. Fundraiser for historic church
A Bud Spud and Steak is being held to help the historic St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church on May 10. Play golf and help charities
By picking up a golf club you can help a few charities. The Rotary Club of Winnipeg-Assiniboine and CG Power Systems Canada is holding its third annual charity golf tournament on June 20 at the Breezy Bend Country Club. The fee, which is due by May 23, is $200 and includes golf cart, driving range, practice putting, tee box gift, door prize, pre-tournament lunch, and dinner. Manitoba Riding for the Disabled Association, Camp Manitou, ALS Brummit-Feasby House, and Rotary community projects are the beneficiaries of the tournament. Charity hockey game helps children with disabilities
The Manitoba Women's Junior Hockey League is holding a charity hockey game to help children living with disabilities on May 4. The exhibition game, which will see the league's top players come out, is in support of the Children's Rehabilitation Foundation. Motorcyclists fight prostate cancer
Motorcyclists will be riding to fight prostate cancer on May 25. The Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad is holding pre-registration at the Polo Park Earls on May 24 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the event starting there the next day at 10 a.m. For more information go to www.ridefordad.ca
Soroptimist awards luncheon held
Soroptimist International of Winnipeg handed out a total of $5,200 in awards to deserving Winnipeg women at its annual awards luncheon recently. Cat Ross, founder of Kenya Initiative for Development and Sustainability, was honoured for her volunteer activity which helps women and children. Soroptimist International pushes for human rights for all and for advancement of women and girls around the world.
