Plenty of fabulous prizes in fundraising campaign

There are many annual traditions at this time of year, and here at Pennies from Heaven, we're pleased to roll out ours.

Yep, it's time for our annual fundraising event to help the people who otherwise might wake up without a Christmas present in a few weeks or not have that full feeling you get after a festive dinner.

The best part is there are several winners here: Some lucky people will win prizes while those less fortunate who get help from the Christmas Cheer Board and Winnipeg Harvest also benefit.

This year, we have added a special wrinkle -- we're auctioning off a couple of world-class athletes for the benefit of schools, courtesy of our Pennies partner RBC and its RBC Olympian program.

Just check the box for that prize and if you're the winner, you could have Paralympian Jared Funk show students at your Winnipeg school -- or your kids' or grandkids' school -- how he helped his wheelchair rugby team win silver at the recent Paralympics in London, as well as earlier medals in China and Greece.

There's also one of the world's best curlers, Jill Officer of the Jennifer Jones team, who might demonstrate the sport at your school before she gets a chance to try competing at the next Winter Olympics.

Ben Moss Jewellers has once again added some glitter to our fundraiser. This year they are providing us with a spectacular pendant made with 10-karat white gold and a 0.15 carat Canadian Ice diamond.

Each Canadian diamond is laser engraved with a serial number, and the diamond even comes with its own birth certificate showing it was mined from Canada's Diavik Mine in the Northwest Territories.

The pendant retails for $500. It would make a very sweet Christmas present for the special somebody in your life.

Then there are concert tickets. Want a chance to see Sarah Brightman? Or Randy Bachman? If you're a country fan: Charlie Pride? Blue Rodeo? The Tragically Hip?

Check off this one and you could have a chance of listening to some great music.

All it will cost you for a chance at any of these prizes is the price of a newspaper (you need to send in an original ballot, not a photocopy), a stamp to send in the ballot, and -- hopefully because we are a fundraiser -- some cash inside the envelope.

Heck, if you send a cheque, you'll also end up with a tax receipt.

Just check off which prize you'd like to win (it could even be all three) and then on Dec. 21, I'll start drawing ballots. When we get to the concert tickets, I'll start calling people in order to see which concert they'd like to attend.

Where to donate

There are giant collection bins inside all of our city's Walmart stores. Look for the bin featuring a winged me with my two daughters.

All RBC branches in the city have our collection bins.

Our giant penny is once again on the second floor of Portage Place facing the Edmonton Court.

There is a bin at the Winnipeg Free Press at 1355 Mountain Ave.
