Police await autopsy to identify fire victim

Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy so they can identify the person who died Thursday in a house fire on Fleet Avenue.

Emergency crews responded to a residence at 1228 Fleet Ave. regarding a working fire around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

A person was found dead in the home and members of the arson strike force were notified. They continue to investigate.

Damage to the home is estimated at $380,000.

Police know the identity of the person who lived in the home but are not certain that individual was the one who died, police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said.

There are no signs that the fire was deliberately set, he said. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Fire crews took hours to mop up after fighting the fire for much of the night, which delayed a search of the burned-out house.

It was Thursday afternoon before police were able to confirm the fatality.

Neighbours reported the house had one occupant, a single woman, but authorities are unlikely to release any additional information until autopsy results are available.

Neighbours said earlier they hoped the woman who lived in the storey-and-a-half home was out of the house.
