Cops corner robbery suspect

POLICE have charged a man in connection with a string of commercial robberies in April. The robberies began April 2 and were carried out at businesses on Ness, Portage and River avenues as well as Pembina Highway throughout the month, Winnipeg police said in a news release.

In each of the incidents, the bandit either produced a weapon or implied he had one. In all but one, the suspect obtained an undisclosed amount of money. No one was injured during any of the incidents.

On Friday night, police arrested a man in connection with the eight robberies following a holdup at a business in the 700 block of Portage Avenue. Police said a man demanded money from the clerk who refused. The robber ran away and police were called. Police said they arrested a suspect in the immediate vicinity without incident.

John Victor Andrew Munroe, 30, has been charged with several robbery-related offences.

He was detained at the Remand Centre.

Girl foils attempted luring

POLICE are looking for a man who tried to lure a seven-year-old girl into his car Friday night.

Police were called to her home just after 8 p.m. in the area of Sanford Fleming Road and Plessis Road. The child said she was playing outside when a Caucasian man between the ages of 20 and 30 in a newer, white, four-door car pulled up and asked her to get inside. When she refused, he offered her candy, police said. She ran and notified her parents who called police.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident or the suspect to contact investigators at (204)986-2857 or Crime Stoppers at (204)786-TIPS (8477).

Drugs, handgun seized in raid

THREE men were arrested and drugs and a handgun were seized Thursday after police executed a search warrant in the 100 block of Hutton Street.

Officers had help from the tactical unit and the suspects were arrested without incident. In a press release, police said they seized cocaine, marijuana, ecstasy, prescription narcotics, $5,510 in cash and a .32-caliber Beretta handgun with ammunition. Three Winnipeg men ranging in age from 20 to 28 years old have been charged with several drug and firearms-related offences. The 28-year-old suspect is being held in custody. The two 20-year-olds have been released on promises to appear.
