Police seek public's help solving sexual assault

A 16-year-old teenage girl was abducted from a downtown bus stop on Sargent Avenue in the early hours of Friday morning and seriously sexually assaulted, Winnipeg police reported.

The teenager reported the assault to police after her abductor freed her, pushing her out of the car blocks away in the West End after the assault.

Police are asking the public to keep an eye out for a small, white four-door car with black pinstripe details on the side. The suspect was described as a man, east Indian in appearance, about 30 years of age. He had a medium build, short black hair and a black beard.

Police said the teenager told them she was waiting for a bus in the area of Sargent Avenue and Maryland Street when she spotted a vehicle that was being driven in a suspicious manner. It eventually stopped and a man got out and confronted the girl. He took hold of her and forced her into the car and she couldn't get away, despite trying to flee.

The car, with the girl in it, was driven away and after about 10 minutes, it stopped in the area of Ellice Avenue and King Edward Street. Once parked, the girl was the victim of a serious sexual assault, police reported. The incident occurred about 4:30 a.m.

Police are investigating and anyone with information about the incident or the identity of the suspect is asked to call investigators at 204-986-6245 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
