Police standoff follows shooting
Deadly day as woman later dies at bus stop

There was traffic chaos in downtown Winnipeg early Friday in connection with a late-night shooting and a separate incident in which a woman was killed by a vehicle while waiting for a morning bus.
A man was shot about 2 a.m. at Johnny G's Restaurant and Bar on Main Street. Police were not releasing details on the victim's condition Friday.
The investigation led police to an address in the 500 block of Sherbrook Street, where a standoff ensued. The police tactical unit was on the scene. Negotiations ensued between police and some residents in the block between Sargent and Ellice avenues.
Sherbrook was blocked off to motorists. As well, the police helicopter hovered over Sherbrook as young children -- many of them accompanied by their mothers -- made their way to nearby schools.
Heavily armed officers taking part in the standoff emerged from a Sherbrook Street apartment block about 9:30 a.m. with a man in handcuffs. By mid-morning, at least three more suspects had been taken into the back of police cruisers.
Johnny G's, a late-night eatery, is located on Main Street just north of Broadway. It was cordoned off with police tape throughout the day.
Meanwhile, a 53-year-old woman was struck by one of the vehicles involved in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Notre Dame Avenue and Isabel Street. The woman was transported to hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The crash occurred at the intersection around 6 a.m., and one of the vehicles then collided with the woman standing on the sidewalk near a bus stop in front of the Independent Jewellers store.
The investigation in both incidents continues. Anyone with information in the cases, who has not yet spoken with police, is asked to call 204-986-6271 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
