Police still concealing victim's identity

A 26-year-old man found stabbed downtown early last Tuesday died on Saturday, the Winnipeg Police Service said.

He is the city's 13th homicide victim this year.

Police have not yet released his name and would not say Sunday why they have not done so.

The man was found stabbed and lying on a roadway early Tuesday near Notre Dame Avenue and Balmoral Street. He was taken to hospital in critical condition.

A passerby spotted the victim lying in the street at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police could be seen working in the area Saturday afternoon.

Staff and patrons of the Balmoral Motor Hotel and its beer vendor, the only late-night business in the immediate area, said no one appears to be aware of the victim's identity.

No arrests have been made.

Police said a gang connection has not been ruled out.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 986-6668 or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.
