Poor turnout a bad sign, activist says

POVERTY hasn't been reduced just because the fifth annual Four Walks to end poverty saw lower numbers of people this year. In fact, organizer Cheryl-Anne Carr said on Saturday it shows poverty is worse than ever.

"People are having to tighten their belts," Carr said.

"We have many people who are at work today and can't even book off the time to come because they need the money. We are a rich country but some have success while others are one meal away from starving.

"We think you should have the right to a house and a job and be able to pick your meals."

Where in the recent past, numerous people would have started marching from four points on the Perimeter at Main Street, St. Mary's Road, Portage Avenue and Pembina Highway, the numbers were so low a lone couple with one flag between them walked down the sidewalk on Main Street.

"All my friends had to work today -- I'm representing them," said Anna-Celestrya Carr. The walk culminated at the provincial legislature with speeches.
