Pride, in the name of equality

AN organizer of the city's upcoming 26th annual gay pride festival said the fight for rights isn't just local but global.

Craig Theriault, vice-president of Pride Winnipeg 2013, said the theme of this year's events will be called EquALL.

"...Our goals are to create equality for all persons, and particularly, the LGBT community. So it's something that we thought be interesting to put to the front," said Theriault, at an event launch Wednesday morning at Delta Winnipeg.

He said the fight for rights for LGBT people is still evident in countries like Uganda, which he said he's "continuously concerned" about. An anti-homosexual bill will be before the East African's country's parliament this year. "In Canada, we enjoy a lot of equal human rights," he said, saying that's not the case everywhere.

The pride parade last June attracted approximately 30,000 people, he said. The festival will run from May 24 to June 2 this year.

In March 2014, the city will be hosting about 100 people from across the country at a Fierté Canada Pride conference.

He said the three-day conference here will have an economic impact of an expected $1 million to $2 million.

At the launch today was Gloria Booths, a.k.a Bob Burgess, who is known for wearing incredible costumes in each year's parade.

Booths was tight-lipped about this year's costume, but said it will be "different" than prior years.

Theriault said there will a Pride 13 launch party at Gio's Friday night to celebrate, and members of the public are welcome. The event goes from 9 p.m. onwards, and costs $10.
