Province donates $100,000 to relief work in the Philippines

WINNIPEG -- The Manitoba government has announced it will give $100,000 to the Manitoba Council for International Co-operation for relief work in the flood-stricken Philippines.

"Our thoughts are with the people of the Philippines at this very difficult time," said Premier Greg Selinger.

"All Manitobans stand in solidarity with our province's large and close-knit Filipino community as we offer support to friends and family in the Philippines recovering from this devastating natural disaster."

Early estimates suggest the tropical storm Wahsi has claimed close to 1,000 lives and there is an ongoing high risk of water-borne illness.

The provincial government has previously supported relief efforts of the MCIC in response to several international disasters including the devastating earthquakes in Japan, Haiti, Indonesia and Pakistan.
