Public entitled to info, new health pamphlet says

THE Selinger government announced Wednesday it is distributing pamphlets and posters to let members of the public know they are entitled to information if a family member is unexpectedly hurt or dies while under hospital care.

Health Minister Theresa Oswald said the resources support new legislation that requires health facilities to investigate and share information with families in the event of a critical incident -- defined as an event when something unexpected happens during the course of patient care that has a serious adverse effect on the patient.

Manitoba is one of three provinces with critical incident legislation.

The new resources were developed by the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety in partnership with regional health authorities and Manitoba Health.
