She's one of the most famous personal trainers in the world, but Jillian Michaels doesn't just want to help you lose weight, she wants to change your life.
One of the stars of The Biggest Loser reality-television show is taking her message on the road with a one-woman motivational tour. "Maximize Your Life" will kick off in Winnipeg on April 4.
Known for her take-no-prisoners demeanour on the show's ranch, she understands her core competencies are nutrition- and fitness-related but her tour is more than that -- it's about inspiring people to change whatever they don't like about themselves. Want to quit smoking, be a better parent or get more done at work? She's there for you.
Tickets for Michaels' show went on sale a couple of weeks ago and range from $47.75 to $93.
She spoke with the Free Press recently from her home in Los Angeles.
Q: What kind of show will you be putting on in Winnipeg?
A: You're going to walk out of there knowing how to eat right and lose weight, the fastest way to lose weight and how to keep it off. We'll cover why people are (gaining weight) and I'll be bringing people up on stage and putting them through various exercises. We'll do a Q and A, too.
Q: Your touring show is called Maximize Your Life. How different is it from The Biggest Loser?
A: It's not about fitness and weight loss, it's about how you can change and transform any aspect of your life that you choose to. Those are just the tools that I use to help people redefine their self-image and build a better life. It's learning to understand all the negative patterns you repeat, why you repeat them and how to stop. It's about gaining the tools and skill set to make the necessary changes in your life and transform your situation so you can attain your dreams.
Q: So, The Biggest Loser is more a show about people transforming themselves and tapping into their full potential?
A: The show isn't just you were fat and now you're thin. It's about changing any aspect of your life that you're dissatisfied with, it's about understanding how and why you get in your own way and how to get out of it.
People get comfortably numb, like that old Pink Floyd song. You do what you think you should, you're miserable and you don't know why.
Q: Can people get any assurance that they won't fall back into their old habits if you're not around to kick them in the pants, like on The Biggest Loser ranch?
A: We have a success rate of 60 per cent (of getting people to lose weight and keep it off), which is staggering, because the success rate in the outside world is five per cent.
Q: Will you be working out while you're in Winnipeg?
A: I haven't done a tour like this yet. It's going to be an interesting exercise. I'm bringing my road bike with me and I'll go for a jog or a bike ride. I'll be looking for hotels that have gyms. I can also get a quick workout in before a show. Maybe I'll pop in a DVD on the tour bus.
Q: What's Bob (fellow Biggest Loser trainer Bob Harper) like?
A: He's a sweetheart, a doll. We're best friends. We're TV husband and wife. We've been together for 10 years. We understand each other in a way that nobody else would understand because of the nature of the job. We're like peanut butter and jelly.
