Read all about it... there's a new paper in town

WINNIPEG'S newest community newspaper will hit doorsteps in south Winnipeg today.

The Sou'wester, which brings the Canstar Community News family to six papers, will be launched in Tuxedo, River Heights, Crescentwood, Fort Rouge, Fort Richmond, St. Norbert, Whyte Ridge, Waverley Heights, Linden Woods and Waverley West.

In an effort to start off with a strong community connection, the new paper's moniker was selected from readers' suggestions by Bob Cox, publisher of Canstar, and John Kendle, managing editor of the half-dozen papers.

Hartley Schwark, a reader of The Metro, submitted the winning name.

Canstar, one of the few news outlets in North America to expand during the current economic downturn, also publishes The Lance, The Herald, The Times and The Metro for the Winnipeg market and The Headliner for Headingley and surrounding municipalities. Combined, the papers reach more than 185,000 doors each week.

Canstar decided to launch The Sou'wester because The Lance and The Metro were covering increasingly large areas of south Winnipeg and it was felt splitting their geographies in three would provide readers with news that's as close to home as possible.
