Reducing class sizes a success, says Selinger

PREMIER Greg Selinger has declared the first year of reducing class sizes a success. The province will cap kindergarten to Grade 3 classes at 20 by 2017.

Selinger said Wednesday the province added 79 teachers this year, increasing by 13.7 per cent the number of K-3 classes with 20 or fewer students. There's a 20 per cent reduction in classes with 24 or more students, and an 11 per cent drop in classes with 23 or fewer students.

"That allows each student to get off to a better start in school," Selinger said in a brief appearance at École La Verendrye School in Fort Rouge.

"We actually exceeded our first-year expectations," Selinger said, though he was not able to say what the province's target had been, or what percentage of the overall need was covered this year.

Meanwhile, Selinger announced the province will build a new gymnasium at La Verendrye, a nursery to Grade 6 school that has made do with a tiny, low-celinged gym for decades.
