A retired Canadian Forces soldier is accused of committing a sex assault at CFB Shilo last May.
Retired warrant officer Jason Buenacruz faces a charge of sexual assault under the Criminal Code and two counts of abuse of a subordinate, a separate pair of charges laid under the National Defence Act. He also faces conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline, a military misconduct charge.
The first regiment of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery and the second battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry are based in Shilo, 35 kilometres east of Brandon.
The military made the charges public Friday. Military courts have jurisdiction over retired personnel when the alleged offence took place while they were on active duty.
The Department of National Defence states on its website that penalties under courts martial range from minor punishment and demotions up to and including prison sentences in both military as well as federal and provincial correctional institutions.
