Riverside cottage for St. Amant

MORE than 200 adults and children with developmental disabilities will soon have their own riverbank vacation cottage right in Winnipeg.
The St. Amant Centre in St. Vital broke ground Wednesday on a $1-million three-bedroom, fully accessible cottage to be built in a secluded spot along the Red River on the centre's sprawling grounds on River Road.
"They'll be able to come and stay overnight," St. Amant CEO and president John Leggat said Wednesday. "It is a cottage experience.
"It's a destination for vacations."
Leggat said there are 200 residents at the centre and 60 sister homes around the city. St. Amant has a cottage on Lake Winnipeg, but that's not available for overnight stays.
Dubbed the Spirit Cottage, it will be built on the site of a cottage formerly owned by the Grey Nuns.
The 2,400-square-foot cottage's tracking system makes it fully accessible without using a wheelchair, Leggat said.
The system is in the ceiling, he explained. "There's a hook that comes down, there's a lift that comes down and moves them through the house."
The centre will refurbish an outdoor pool next to the cottage and will install a firepit.
"They can enjoy some time with family members. It'll be an amazing experience," he said.
The Hans Kraus family and Qualico are covering half of the cost, and the rest will be fundraised.
