Rock on

Southdale couple have no need to water their lawn

  • Print

This summer's record hot weather has turned many luscious green lawns into ragged yellow mats, but one Southdale couple found the perfect antidote: rocks.

Rocks of every size -- pebbles to boulders -- cover the entire front yard of Linda and Stefan Erjavec's home.

"I have to admit it takes awhile to get used to," Stefan Erjavec said of his new front yard. "But, when you look around... our yard looks good compared to all the brown grass in the neighbourhood."

The Erjavecs hired a landscape firm to replace their front lawn with about 40 cubic yards of rocks -- a bed of two-inch smooth stones, a sprinkling of four-inch riverwash and several dozen strategically placed larger rocks, some more than half-a-metre across.

It cost $6,000 and took about a week to do.

"It's been a week now, and I just love it," Linda Erjavec said.

Stefan Erjavec admits the idea to convert the grass into rock was Linda's idea, and he was reluctant to go along. But, like every wise husband, Stefan now realizes it was the right thing to do.

"We're in our 60s and looking after the lawn and garden was a lot of work and was time consuming." Linda Erjavec said.

"We wanted something that was environmentally friendly and this certainly is -- no more wasting water on the grass, no more smelly gasoline emissions, no more Weed 'n' Feed, no more pesticides. No more work."

Linda Erjavec had the landscape crew place the larger stones in groups of threes so she can place container gardens throughout the yard.

The Erjavecs said they haven't heard from their neighbours, but they've all stopped to see the lawn.

"I like it so much that, if we have the money, we're going to do the backyard next year," Linda Erjavec said.
