RRC president to return cash for golf shoes
Red River College president Stephanie Forsyth will pay the college back for a $205 pair of golf shoes for which she billed the college in 2011.
Forsyth also said in a statement Thursday that as of April 1 her expense claims will be posted on the college's website "in the interests of full transparency."
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation chided Forsyth Wednesday on her expenses after releasing documents obtained through a freedom-of-information request.
The documents show Forsyth expensed $205 for the golf shoes plus a $134 bag bought at the Vancouver airport and a number of expenses for her BMW, such as car washes, insurance, winter tires and a GPS device.
Forsyth said the shoes were only used for college business, a golf tournament in which she participated.
"However, I understand some people may find the expense questionable, so I will repay this expense," she said in the statement.
She also said the luggage bag she bought in Vancouver was purchased to replace one damaged in transit. She said it's now in the possession of the college.
She also said in the statement her 2011 driver's licence was expensed in error as part of an auto insurance claim, and that she will pay the college back immediately.
Forsyth also said in the statement her total expenses include all allowable expenses incurred in her work as college president, work that includes travel, meetings and vehicle expenses.
The CTF's Colin Craig had requested the RRC board, in a letter to Red River College board of governors chairman Richard Lennon, to review the expenses and if appropriate, seek reimbursement from Forsyth.
Craig said Thursday he was pleased with Forsyth's response. "I think it's a victory for taxpayers," he said.
He also thanked a whistleblower who brought the expenses to the CTF's attention.
