Sailors raise money for burn fund

REPRESENTATIVES of the warship HMCS Winnipeg were back in their namesake city on the weekend after an intense NATO mission tracking down Somali pirates off the coast of Africa.

But the sailors weren't content to relax on their shore leave -- 10 of them staged a run from the Saskatchewan boundary to Winnipeg to raise more than $7,000 for the local Firefighters Burn Fund.

"We feel a very special connection to the city of Winnipeg," said Cmdr. Robert Ferguson. "Particularly since the last deployment, the ship's company really felt a lot of support from the citizens."
