Second-degree murder charge laid in Sunday's Furby Street stabbing

WINNIPEG police have charged a 22-year-old man with second-degree murder in connection with the Sunday-morning stabbing death of Cherie Lynn Richard.

Police said Derrick Mark Sanderson was arrested downtown on Wednesday afternoon. In addition to second-degree murder, he was charged with breaching probation.

Richard and her sister were riding bicycles in the 500 block of Furby Street at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, when they were approached by a man and two women. An argument ensued and Richard, 20, was stabbed.

She died later in hospital from her injury.

Richard's death is the city's 19th homicide of the year. Police said the investigation is continuing.
