POLICE have arrested a second man in connection with the recent homicide of 33-year-old Sheldon Kostenko.

Officers arrested Denver Sean Gyles Thursday at about 3:30 a.m. near Princess Street and McDermot Avenue.

Gyles was wanted by police for the death of Kostenko, who police said was confronted and assaulted by two men in his Morley Avenue apartment building Dec. 3.

Days after the killing, police had already arrested Jordan Gregory Charney, 24, and charged him with second-degree murder.

Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said police were "acting on information" when they stopped the vehicle at the intersection. Michalyshen said media coverage about Gyles played a "big part" in the arrest.

"Some information had been provided to police and to investigators with regards to the whereabouts of this individual. Obviously, we acted on that information," said Michalyshen.

The arrest happened about a block from the Public Safety Building.

"Given the location that he was, one may surmise that maybe he was on his way to the Public Safety Building. I can't confirm that, but that's always a possibility," said Michalyshen.

Police haven't released what the motive was for the attack and haven't ruled out if drugs were involved.

Gyles was charged with second degree murder. He was in custody Thursday.

Michalyhsen said no more arrests are pending in the death.

Police said there have been 38 homicides in the city this year, five of which are unsolved.

Michalyshen said that includes the death of Dominique McCann, 19, who was rushed to hospital after being found Dec. 2 after police went to a medical call on the 400 block of Selkirk Avenue.

Police have not identified any suspects in the case.
