Second woman faces charges in kitten-beating incident

A 22-year-old woman who has turned herself in to police is the second person to face charges in an incident two weeks ago where a kitten was beaten with baseball bat so badly it had to be euthanized.

A 23-year-old woman was arrested July 17, the day of the attack, and faces animal cruelty charges.

The case was one of a string of animal cruelty incidents in the days leading up to a decision by the Winnipeg Police Service and Crime Stoppers to announce they were joining forces with a fledgling non-profit service, Paw Tipsters, to combat animal cruelty.

On July 17, two women went to a house in the 500 block of Pritchard Avenue around 12:30 a.m. One of them had a dispute with a woman who lived there, police said.

During this time, a three-month-old kitten was struck with a baseball bat that belonged to the resident, who fled inside the house. The second suspect is alleged to have used the same bat to break a window in the home after the bat had been used on the cat, police said.

Delia Ashley Clarke, 22, has been charged with mischief and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
