Security fine despite bike thefts, WRHA says
THE Winnipeg Regional Health Authority says it has no plans to change security measures following reports of bike thefts on hospital property.
"We don't have any current plans, as far as I know, to make changes to security," said Kathryn McBurney, media specialist for the health authority.
"Essentially for the security stuff on hospital premises, the first priority is to ensure safety of patients and staff and they also watch for hospital equipment and do their best to look out for personal belongings.
"However, (people) leave their belongings at their own risk. We suggest that people do their best to ensure the safety of their things. It's like any public place."
McBurney's statement came after an article published Monday in the Free Press about Linda Markham, a woman who rode her bike on July 19 to St. Boniface Hospital to attend the birth of her fourth grandchild, Colin.
While checking the front entrance a third time, she discovered her Schwinn mountain bike had been stolen.
And Markham's story is a familiar one to Jacques Marcoux, whose bike went missing last March from outside the same hospital.
Marcoux's 2001 Devinci Podium was stolen from hospital property when someone used an electric grinder to cut through the U-Lock securing his bike.
Markham's and Marcoux's burglarized bikes were worth $1,000 and $1,600, respectively.
Despite the similar tales, McBurney said hospitals are not hot spots for bike theft. "They're not concentrated in one specific area, McBurney said. "We haven't noticed a trend."
"However, hospital security will work with police to provide information for thefts that occur on hospital property."
