Shaw scores deal to show TSN Jets, but it won't be free

LOCAL cable provider Shaw Communications scored with local NHL fans when it announced Friday it will carry regionally broadcasted Jets games this season.

Shaw said it will broadcast TSN Jets, beginning with the first pre-season game Sept. 20.

TSN Jets is broadcasting 60 pre-season and regular season Jets games. The remainder of the team's games during the regular season will be seen nationally either on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada or on TSN's national-game broadcasts.

Shaw said there will be a price to watch to these regional TSN Jets games -- $9.95 a month.

Elsewhere in the country, regional broadcasts of NHL games are available on cable without an additional direct charge.

TSN Jets will be available to Shaw subscribers on standard cable and Shaw Direct HD.

Shaw said there will be a free preview until Dec. 1 in both standard and HD.

There's no word yet on whether TSN Jets will be available to MTS TV subscribers. MTS said last week that it was in negotiations with Bell Media.

An MTS Allstream spokeswoman said last week it was committed to carrying TSN Jets but didn't know if it would be available to subscribers free or for an additional charge, like that announced Friday by Shaw.

"We are still in negotiations to carry TSN Jets and will make an announcement as soon as we can, which we expect will be shortly," Selena Hinds, MTS Allstream director of corporate communications, said.

CBC's Hockey Night in Canada will show 22 Jets games this season while TSN will air another five games on its main network.
