Spence neighbourhood incidents probed

Two shootings and a stabbing made for a violent Saturday in the Spence neighbourhood area.

But while all three incidents were within 13 hours and three blocks of each other, Winnipeg police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said they have no evidence any of them are linked to each other.

"We are treating them as separate investigations," Michalyshen said.

"We can't assume they are linked."

Michalyshen said there have been no arrests in any of the incidents and he has no descriptions of any suspects he can give out.

Jamil Mahmood, executive director of the Spence Neighbourhood Association, said it's incidents like these they are hoping to prevent in the future.

"We are in the middle of doing safety audits in the area," Mahmood said.

"We have divided the neighbourhood into eight quadrants and we have completed three of them. We are looking for dangerous spots so we can change them."

Mahmood said the association will have a worker speak to the residents who live where the violent incidents took place to see if they need help.

Winnipeg police were called to a stabbing in the 500 block of Langside Street at about 1:40 a.m., the first of the three incidents.

Michalyshen said a 20-year-old man was rushed to hospital in unstable condition. He was later upgraded to stable.

Michalyshen said officers determined the man was walking near Sargent Avenue and Langside Street at about 1 a.m., when two unknown men confronted him and one stabbed him.

No one has been arrested.

A few hours later, an 18-year-old man was found in the 400 block of Maryland Avenue suffering from gunshot injuries.

Michalyshen said police rushed the teen to hospital in unstable condition at about 6:20 a.m. He has since been upgraded to stable.

About seven hours later, another man was shot a few blocks away, near Sargent Avenue and Langside Street, at about 2 p.m.

Michalyshen said a man was rushed to hospital in unstable condition after being shot in the upper body.

The man has since been upgraded to stable condition.
