Sir Paul at new stadium in summer?

  • Print

Concert promoters Live Nation, the Winnipeg Football Club and True North Sports & Entertainment will hold a press conference Monday at 11 a.m. to announce "a major historical concert event" at Investors Group Field this summer.

The name of the performer, the date and the time of the show will be revealed at the press conference, a press release said Friday. However, the Ottawa Citizen is reporting Live Nation will announce in the nation's capital this Monday Paul McCartney is playing Scotiabank Place in early July.

An early-July date, like what's expected to be announced in Ottawa on Monday, would work in Winnipeg. The Bombers open the 2013 regular season at home on June 27, but are then on the road in Montreal the following week and do not play again at home until July 13.

McCartney is currently on a major world tour called Out There. He has tour dates booked at the end of June in Europe, but is touring again in North America in July.

Live Nation's Ian Low, Kevin Donnelly of True North and Winnipeg Blue Bombers president Garth Buchko will be at the Winnipeg announcement, which will be at Investors Group Field.

Bombers spokesman Darren Cameron said Friday afternoon the club had no comment when asked if McCartney is the act that will be announced Monday.

The Bombers are counting on staging major concerts at the new stadium to help generate the revenue they need to make their annual $4.5-million mortgage payment.

A McCartney show would be the second major concert at the stadium this summer. A June 22 Taylor Swift concert at Investors Group Field sold out in hours when tickets went on sale late last year.

McCartney last played in Winnipeg on May 21, 1993 at Winnipeg Stadium.
