Slain man wasn't 'transient': friend

A friend of a Winnipeg man who was killed in Lloydminster last week is disputing an RCMP description of him as a "transient" person, saying he was there for work.

Dustin Ferrante, 51, was found dead in his room at the Best Lodge Hotel just after 4 a.m. Thursday. RCMP investigators in Lloydminster are treating his death as a homicide.

"Our information is he was a bit of a transient person but was doing some work in the area," said Staff Sgt. Dave Kalist.

Kevin, a colleague of Ferrante's who didn't want his last name released, said Ferrante was in Lloydminster to work on a drywalling project at a local school. He was set to return to his hometown of Winnipeg on Dec. 21.

As a tradesman, Ferrante often had to travel for work but had a home in Winnipeg, Kevin said. He argued that the nature of working in a trade means one often has to leave home to go where the work is, but that doesn't make someone transient.

"Just because we travel for work doesn't make us transient. We all have a hometown. He was there for a specific job," he said.

Ferrante had planned to come back to Lloydminster to finish working on the drywalling project in January, he said.

Though Kevin didn't know Ferrante for long, he often shared rides to work with him and described him as friendly and easygoing.

"He was a really nice guy. He got along really well with everyone. He probably got along with people at work better than anybody. I'm really gonna miss him," he said.

As of Dec. 24, there were no arrests in the case. Lloydminster RCMP were not available for comment Tuesday.
