Sleep disorder centre opens

THE new sleep disorder centre was officially opened Wednesday at its new home at the Misericordia Health Centre. Health Minister Theresa Oswald said the median waiting time at the centre -- from study to treatment -- has been reduced by 90 per cent, from 169 weeks to 13 weeks.

The new location is a consolidation of facilities that previously operated out of St. Boniface General Hospital and Health Sciences Centre.

Rev. Vince Herner, the director of spiritual care at Misericordia, has had sleeping problems and found himself a patient at the centre. He said his follow-up appointment was pre-booked for a date two weeks after his sleep test in December, something that never happened at St. Boniface.Capital costs for renovating space at the Misericordia totalled $1.2 million.

Misericordia board chairman Laurie Finley, who is also vice-president of sales and marketing at the Free Press, said the sleep disorder centre is the first phase of a major re-development of Misericordia expected to cost $17.5 million.

The new centre has a staff of 35 people and an operating budget of almost $5 million. It has 10 beds, up from eight beds between the two former locations.
