Spirits honour spirit of Selkirk settlers

IF you've ever felt like embracing your inner Selkirk settler, one of the most famous scotch whiskey distillers in the world may have just the thing for you.

Eight hundred and eighty-eight bottles of the Glenfiddich Limited Edition Cask of Dreams have arrived in Manitoba Liquor Control Commission stores. More than seven months ago, on Jan. 25 -- Robbie Burns Day -- two American oak barrels were rolled into town and signed by hundreds of Manitobans. The barrels were subsequently returned to the Glenfiddich distillery in Dufftown, Scotland, but their contents have come back to Manitoba in honour of the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Selkirk Settlers.

"The spirit of the Selkirk settlers helped shape Manitoba and we're pleased to celebrate the rich heritage of our province by offering this limited-edition product," said Roman Zubach, MLCC's chief operating officer.

In 1812, Thomas Douglas, the fifth Earl of Selkirk, helped settle many Scottish farmers within the Selkirk Settlement, an area nearly four times bigger than Scotland. This settlement helped lay the foundation for Manitoba itself.

The bottles retail for $99.99 plus taxes at select MLCC stores.
