St. Vital voters cast ballot for city councillor

VOTERS in Winnipeg's most populous ward will head to the polls today to decide who will replace former St. Vital councillor Gord Steeves.

Ten candidates are on the ballot in the race to replace Steeves, who resigned from council to run unsuccessfully as a candidate in last month's provincial election. The winner has the potential to affect the balance of power on city council. Steeves, a longtime Liberal, was a staunch ally of Mayor Sam Katz.

Eight other candidates are vying for a vacancy on the Louis Riel school board, and seven candidates will compete for a spot on the Winnipeg School Division board. Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and voters are reminded to carry a government-issued photo ID, and at least two other documents that show a current address.

No-shows must pay up

BE prepared to pay if you aren't home for a water meter inspection.

Next year, the City of Winnipeg wants to charge $35 if staff attend a home for a water meter inspection and no one is home. In 2013, that fee will increase to $50.

The fee is part of a host of new charges the City of Winnipeg wants to add to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, public works, and water and waste department to recover costs. Those include increased application fees for contractors to install water and sewer services, new fees for certain permits, and an administrative fee of $100 to apply to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

Council's finance committee will consider the proposed fees Thursday.

$5.9-M flood aid sought

THE City of Winnipeg plans to submit a $5.9-million Disaster Financial Assistance claim to the province for flood-fighting costs.

A city report said Winnipeg spent $1.8 million on property contracts, $1 million on consultant services, $1.6 million on maintenance materials and $741,000 on overtime costs from the spring flood.

Council's finance committee will review the claim Thursday.
