Stranger from nearby apartment stabbed woman on Furby, says sister
Women felt safe in the neighbourhood before attack
The sister of the city's latest homicide victim says her sister was stabbed by a stranger who ran out of a nearby apartment building while the two of them stood on their bicycles.
Cherie Lynn Richard, 20, was stabbed early Sunday near the corner of Furby Street and Sargent Avenue. She died of her injuries despite efforts by a neighbour and city paramedics.
The victim's sister, Shaylene Richard, said she and Cherie were standing with their bikes on Furby Street at around 5 a.m. Sunday when a man ran out of an apartment and stabbed Cherie in the stomach.
"He ran away right away," Richard said. "She was lying on the ground bleeding. She just kept saying ‘Shaylene, Shaylene, Shaylene’ over and over again. That’s all she said."
Shaylene, who lived with Cherie in the West End neighbourhood, said she and her sister felt safe in their neighborhood prior to the attack.
"We would always go out at 5, 6 in the morning. Never got scared before. Never got problems. It felt safe," she said.
No arrests made
Police said the Richard sisters were approached by a male and two females, and Cherie was stabbed following a verbal altercation.
No arrests have been made. Richard's death is the city's 19th homicide of 2012.
A witness who identified himself only as Joseph said he was walking down the street at about 5 a.m. when he saw two women on bikes and three men standing on the street near them. He said he didn't hear what they were talking about but didn't think the mood was volatile.
As he strolled away from the group, he was startled by a woman's screams. He returned to the scene and saw one of the women lying on the ground and an area resident performing CPR.
Joseph said he saw "a lot of blood."
"To be honest, it was scary, real scary. I knew she was bad, in trouble. I could see that she had lots of blood gone and didn't look good. I heard lots of screaming after that when people saw her," he said.
Joseph said paramedics and police arrived on the scene minutes later.
Jay Denchuk has lived in the building for a year and said there are a lot of drug dealers in the area and fights in the back alley.
"There's been a lot of doors being kicked in," he said, referring to drug busts in the building.
Police had a stretch of Furby blocked off with yellow police tape for hours after the incident as investigators with the identification unit placed evidence markers. Two bikes lay on the ground inside the taped area.
Residents gathered around the edges of the police tape, watching as police combed the area for hours.
"We all just want to know why it happened," Joseph said.
The Winnipeg Police Service homicide unit continues to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call (204) 986-6508 or CrimeStoppers at (204) 786-8477.
