Camp lets trumpet players blow horn

Nick Martin

This one time, at trumpet camp...

Some of the best young trumpet players from Grade 8 through university, and even a school music teacher or two, will hit the University of Manitoba next month for what organizers hope is becoming a prestigious annual summer camp.

"It's been off and on" in the past. "This is the second year I've put it on," said camp official Shane Hicks, a fifth-year student in music and education, who's also one of the students taking the camp.

Two trumpet players he described as world-class -- Richard Romm of Florida and Chase Sanborn of Toronto -- will be teaching the courses, along with professors from the faculty of music and members of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Hicks said.

"The youngest we've had is Grade 8," said Hicks, but most participants are in high school or university, as well as a couple of school music teachers. There is pretty much an even gender split, he said.

Of the 30 registered so far, the vast majority is from Manitoba, though there are also young musicians from Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and North and South Dakota registered.

"Someone living in Israel e-mailed me" about taking part, said Hicks.

Each participant will spend at least three hours a day playing the trumpet, while also taking part in workshops and watching other participants perform in one-on-one teaching sessions.

"Each student gets a private lesson, with an audience," Hicks said.

"The guest artist talks about the business of being a musician," or discussess other insider information for students serious about making music a career.

Hicks said the U of M also runs a jazz camp in August, but he was unaware of any other university holding a camp specifically for trumpet.

The camp runs Aug. 5 to 8. The cost is $335. Registration information is available at http://umanitoba.ca/extended/summer/calendar/institutes/institutes.shtml.

Sanborn performs Aug. 5 and Romm Aug. 6, both at 7:30 p.m. at the faculty of music. Tickets are available at St John's Music or at the door.
