Police seize illegal cigarettes

TWO men, aged 49 and 56, have been charged after police seized the equivalent of 1,000 cartons of contraband cigarettes near the Manitoba-Ontario border last Saturday.

The illicit, unmarked cigarettes have an estimated street value of $30,000. The truck used to transport the cigarettes was seized.

If convicted, the men face fines and penalties of more than $100,000.

The Manitoba Finance special investigations unit encourages anyone with information about illicit tobacco to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or in Winnipeg at 786-TIPS.
