Supermarket cashier stabbed; customers hold suspect for police

A cashier at a Broadway supermarket was stabbed Tuesday afternoon and customers rushed in to help.

The attack by a knife-wielding female robber happened behind the front counter of Pals Supermarket at 619 Broadway around 4:10 p.m.

The cashier, a 30-year-old woman, was trying to get money out of the register for the robber when the machine malfunctioned, causing the suspect to attack, a police spokesman said.

People nearby rushed to the clerk's aid, and held the suspect until officers arrived.

Const. Rob Carver of the Winnipeg Police Service described the stabbing as "horrendous."

The victim and attacker didn't know each other, he said.

Another store employee told the Free Press Wednesday the store has its own security.

The victim went to hospital in unstable condition but was later upgraded to stable.

Delores Williams, 48, was charged with attempted murder, robbery with a weapon, and two counts of uttering threats.

"There were comments made both to the victim and to arresting officers that indicated that there was a degree of intent here that we don't normally see with a robbery," said Carver.
