Tanning beds focus of private member's bill

MANITOBA Conservative MP James Bezan asked Parliament Thursday to send a strong message about the dangers of using a tanning bed.

Bezan, the MP for Selkirk-Interlake, introduced a private member's bill that would require warning labels to be more easily seen, make a clear link between ultraviolet rays and skin cancer and recommend anyone under 18 not use a tanning bed.

Bezan is pushing for the changes after his wife was diagnosed with skin cancer. Kelly Bezan spent years tanning outside and in tanning beds.

She has had two diagnoses of malignant melanoma, the most harmful form of skin cancer.

The Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Dermatology Association have both launched campaigns regarding the dangers of suntanning recently.
