Teen badly hurt in collision

A 17-year-old Selkirk boy is in critical condition following a two-vehicle collision early Saturday morning on Highway 9 in the RM of West St. Paul.

RCMP say a Honda Civic heading southbound collided with a northbound Chevrolet Tahoe at around 1 a.m. The incident happened on a curve of the highway south of the Rivercrest Hotel.

The teen was the only occupant of the Civic. RCMP say he was extricated with serious injuries and taken to hospital, where he's listed in critical condition.

The 61-year-old driver and sole occupant of the Tahoe received medical treatment, but did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

Alcohol is not considered a factor in the incident and road conditions were fair, RCMP say.

The investigation is ongoing.

Cabbie, taxi taken

WINNIPEG police arrested a 20-year-old man Saturday morning in connection with a cab theft at gunpoint in North Kildonan overnight.

The cab driver, 32, was reported to be unhurt. The carjacking was reported at approximately 3:30 a.m. in the area of Rothesay Street and Springfield Road.

Police say the cab driver was waved down by a man who demanded to be taken to a location elsewhere in the city. The driver told the man he was en route to picking up a fare and offered to call another taxi, but the man insisted on being given a ride and started to damage the cab's interior, police say.

The driver got out of the cab and asked the man to do the same, but that's when the suspect began to assault the driver, police said, pulling out a gun and threatening him verbally. Eventually, the man took control of the cab, ordering the driver to stay inside as a passenger, police say.

Police tracked down the man soon after in the 500 block of McLeod Avenue, with the cab driver still in the taxi.

A 20-year-old man faces charges of impaired driving and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

He has been detained.
