Nickolas Mullin: familiar with ATVs (FAMILY PHOTO)

HORRIFIED family members watched as a 14-year-old boy driving an all-terrain vehicle was struck and killed by a van Tuesday.

Nickolas Mullin was with his father, grandfather and other family members on a property 45 kilometres northeast of Swan River when they dropped him off near an ATV so he could drive the vehicle through fields and across Highway 268 to help with the haying, his grandfather, John Mullin, said.

Mullin was not there with the group, himself.

The family members waited on the other side of the highway for Nickolas to cross.

"They all saw him stop," Mullin said.

But somehow, Nickolas didn't see the oncoming van.

"There must have been a blind spot," Mullin said. He described the ATV as having a frame and canopy.

"That's about as insane as it gets," Mullin said.

Three occupants of the van were taken to Swan River Valley Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

Nickolas was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Mullin said Nickolas was an experienced driver of ATVs.

He had just finished Grade 9 at Swan Valley High School.
