Thief steals city ambulance

A thief made off with a Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service ambulance early Thursday morning before leaving it abandoned nearby.A WFPS official confirmed the ambulance was left running outside a home on the 200 block of McGregor Street early Tuesday morning at about 4 a.m. while paramedics answered a call. Paramedics left keys in the ambulance's ignition, but had an anti-theft security system on.

All ambulances have factory-installed anti-theft devices that are activated when ambulances are left running.

Police and WFPS said the vehicle was recovered a few blocks away on Bannerman Avenue at about 4:15 a.m.

Police had no information about who might have taken the ambulance for a spin.

"Thankfully, it was only moved a short distance," said Winnipeg Police Service Const. Jason Michalyshen. "There could be a number of reasons this individual did what they did."

He said the only item stolen was a pair of leather gloves.

No drugs were removed from the ambulance and there was no damage to the vehicle, he said.

The WFPS official said ambulances must be left running sometimes to help maintain the temperature, or for other reasons. Officials do not know why the anti-theft device failed.

There was no patient in the ambulance when it was stolen, police said.
